Equity, Opportunity, Relationships: The vision I will to bring to the YCCD Board
I spent the past decade educating, empowering, and engaging immigrant, refugee, and asylum seeking teens new to our community. My students taught me what equity truly means. Each student has a unique story, experience, and vision for their future. Quality education is the key that unlocks their American Dream.
This video highlights two students I came to know during high school, Alicia Godinez and Sharon Chandra, and their experience in Modesto Junior College. While some of the classes and programs they benefited from are no longer offered, the need for mentors, support, and guidance remains the same.
The Guided Pathways being implemented at Modesto Junior College recognizes the challenges many students in our community face and provides them the initial and ongoing support they need to stay the course- whatever course may be. As a trustee I would not only believe in this reinvention of services, but wholeheartedly support the faculty and staff in their mission to ensure student success and completion.
I am confident that my experience as an educator and advocate, coupled with my deep relationships with students and insight to their needs, will provide the YCCD Board of Trustees a fresh voice that represents the realities and potential of our community.
